Inktober 2012 – Day 20

My kids are really getting into Inktober! My 5 year old daughter has started her own Inktober diary and both kids are giving me some cool ideas to sketch up. Yesterday the suggestion was Big Foot. So I drew him in a coffee shop while I was in a coffee shop. I’m pretty sure Big […]

Inktober 2012 – Day 19

I was watching my son playing video games the other day and it – for some reason – gave me the idea to draw a zombie playing video games. This came out a little scarier than I had planned. My art teacher in college had said I always drifted a little too “Disney” with my […]

Inktober 2012 – Day 18

I’m reading Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles to my son at night and fell in love with Tony DiTerlizzi’s illustrations of giants throughout the book. Of course, like all of my half-planned sketches, this one took on a life of it’s own – mostly because it was so much fun drawing trees. Faber-Castell 8 PITT artist […]

Inktober 2012 – Day 17

I wanted to create something along the lines of another of my favorite illustrators, Mattias Inks, but ended up with a good opportunity to break out my “shades of grey” ink brush pens. Maybe some other day of Inktober will be my painful pursuit of Mattias Inks craziness. Faber-Castell 8 PITT artist pen & Faber-Castell […]

Inktober 2012 – Day 16

I made a big push to get to day 15 and then the backlash of business hit me and fell behind. To get the ball rolling again I tried a squiggle line technique where I drew a continuous line on the page and then found characters in the shapes. Something like this Instant Face Maker […]

Inktober 2012 – Day 15

Final sketch in my monster series. I won’t tell you how many times I had to erase and start over on this one. I’m surprised the paper held up. Way to go Moleskine! This is my attempt at a wolf man where I don’t really have to draw any detail and can let the hair […]

Inktober 2012 – Day 14

Monster series, take 2. A kind of hip young Frankenstein with that product in his hair and deep V-neck. The afterthought mob of villagers was pretty fun trying to portray light and blurriness with a bunch of consummate little lines (anyone catch the Homestar reference there?). Faber-Castell 8 PITT artist pen

Inktober 2012 – Day 13

I think it is time for a new Inktober drawing series I am going to call, I hope I can draw classic monsters without producing a whole vat of lame sauce in the process. It’s a working title. Here is my mummy complete with afterthought scarabs. Hopefully there is no copyright infringement here. Faber-Castell 8 […]

Inktober 2012 – Day 12

I stumbled upon a new way of pumpkin carving a few years ago and have made a spectacle of carving pumpkins with my family ever since. I now spend hours planning, sketching, cutting, carving and stay up long nights alone carving way after my kids have gone to bed. It’s awesome! Anyway, here is my […]

Inktober 2012 – Day 11

Finally, the Gruffalo himself, all fierce and buffalo-like. This drawing made me a little nervous with the shading and hair along with high contrast yet soft textures. Luckily the pen must have know what it was doing, because I actually really like how this turned out. That ends this series. Stay tuned for tomorrow’s all […]
